(A)Objectives
Effective homework enables students to extend their learning beyond the classroom, reinforce what they have learned, deepen their understanding of subjects, and build their knowledge.
Homework across all subjects should fulfill the following functions:
- Reinforce classroom learning and prepare students for new topics, guided by teachers to encourage self-study and self-regulated learning.
- Assist students in recognizing their learning progress and challenges, prompting them to seek solutions.
- Assess students’ ability to acquire knowledge, master skills, and develop positive attitudes and values, effectively rewarding curriculum planning and implementation.
- Provide teachers with insights into students’ learning situations, allowing for adjustments in teaching plans and strategies, and offering appropriate feedback to enhance student learning.
- Enable parents to understand their children’s learning progress and characteristics, so they can offer timely support, encouragement, and appreciation.
- Help parents comprehend school curriculum requirements, fostering collaboration with the school to enhance student learning.
(B)Basic Policy
- Homework content should align with curriculum requirements and have clear learning objectives.
- Homework should motivate students, stimulate their thinking, promote initiative in learning, and foster self-regulated learning and creativity.
- The variety of homework in regular classes in Junior Forms should include engaging and creative elements.
- The diversity of homework in Senior Forms and elite classes in Junior Form should incorporate thoughtful, analytical, and creativity-enhancing components.
- Self-learning and self-regulated learning elements may be integrated into homework design to encourage students to explore extracurricular resources for relevant information.
- Challenging questions should be included in homework to enhance students’ generic skills.
- As a guiding principle, teachers should adjust homework difficulty to address the diverse learning needs of students.
- Teachers should assign meaningful homework based on students’ progress to reinforce their learning and conceptual development.
(C)Implementation
- The school homework policy is published on the school website and communicated to parents to ensure awareness.
- Details regarding the amount of homework, correction methods, and the use of homework books should be clearly outlined across subjects, with timely guidance for teachers.
Types of Homework
- In addition to workbooks and worksheets, homework assignments may encompass activities such as reading, textbook previews, book reviews, phrase recitations, conducting experiments, creating models, engaging in online learning, collecting data, working on projects, and preparing interview reports, etc.
- Homework may be completed over short or extended periods, and can be undertaken individually or in groups.
Teacher Support
- Teachers should clearly explain the objectives and requirements of homework, including time limits and strategies for completion, as well as the extent of parental involvement if necessary.
- Teachers should provide appropriate guidance and arrangements based on students’ abilities and learning objectives.
- In Homework Classes and Supplementary Classes, teachers should support students who need assistance with homework challenges.
- Students should have the opportunity to work on homework in class, allowing for immediate teacher guidance if issues arise.
Quantity of Homework
- Teachers should assign a moderate amount of homework based on students’ abilities, considering the balanced development of their academic, physical, and mental health.
- The Heads of Academic Departments and Subject Panel Heads should determine the weight and types of homework for various subjects at each level.
- Subject teachers of the same class should coordinate to balance the daily homework load for students.
- Subject teachers of Junior Forms should utilize the eClass eHomework platform to enable teachers of the same class and parents to monitor and understand the students' workload effectively.
- Adjustments to homework quantity may be provided for students with special education needs, which may include extended deadlines or exemptions from participating in group projects, if deemed necessary.
- Homework during the pre-assessment period should focus on reviewing previously covered material to alleviate exam-related stress.
Feedback
- Teachers should carefully assess homework, providing scores, grades, or comments, and outlining improvement strategies as needed, while recording student performance. Exceptional work should be acknowledged to motivate students.
- Parents or guardians should be notified if students consistently encounter difficulties in submitting homework.
- If students provide valid reasons for incomplete homework, teachers may employ flexible measures such as adjusting lessons or extending deadlines. Guidance may also be offered to help students complete their assignments.
- If homework is submitted late, teachers should note this in the students’ conduct records, and reach out to parents via phone call or electronic platform such as eClass and Google Classrooms. Detention for incomplete homework in the Homework Class should be implemented with parental consent.
(D)Parents' Cooperation
- Parents are encouraged to establish a consistent homework schedule and create a conducive learning environment, such as minimizing distractions and providing necessary materials.
- A clear understanding of homework objectives and requirements enable parents to offer appropriate guidance and help students approach problems from various perspectives to find feasible solutions.
- Parents should review the assigned homework to better understand their children’s workload and support their ongoing learning.
- Communication with teachers help parents stay informed about their children’s progress and share their attitudes towards learning. Any difficulties should be discussed with teachers promptly.
- Parents should encourage diverse activities for their children, teach them to effectively manage their leisure time, assist with scheduling, and discourage reliance on external institutions for rote exam preparation.
(E)Amendment Procedure
- This policy adheres to the guidelines set forth by the Education Bureau and relevant codes from St. Rose of Lima's College, undergoing regular reviews and amendments.
- The Principal oversees the implementation of updates and revisions, making the policy available to teachers and parents for reference.
